About THE CITIZENS’INITIATIVE
Founded in February 2007, Citizens’ Initiative (CI) is a non-partisan Civil Society platform to address development issues. The Citizens’ Initiative is trying to organize a continuing open discussion on the paradigms of development and the relationship between politics and ethics.
The group of students, researchers, and teachers associated with CI question the cost of development and the growing schism between ethics and contemporary political culture. They have been organizing seminars and photo exhibitions throughout the country to show real picture of issues in Singur. They organized a two day film festival with screenings of several takes on development issues recently. Their most ardent wish is to induce long term reflection on models and ethics of development, and to contribute to reconstructive thought and efforts in the areas adversely affected by the present political take on development.

Abstract of the Talk
The focus of the talk would be Singur. This team from CI has visited Singur 8 times since February 2008. They have extensively photographed life in Singur and how it has been affected by the fencing-off of the land for the Tata Motors factory. Very few people in India actually have any idea of what Singur looks like and press photographs can perhaps tell only a miniscule portion of the story. Their photographs are aimed at covering this invisible distance between the affected villages and the urban centers, or to put it simply, to show how development looks like in reality. They would also wish to propose/introduce alternative means of livelihood for people who have for generations been based in agriculture.
